32 Days of Travel

a map of upcoming European destinations

What?!

Yes, really. It’s as implied in the title of this post. A month of leisure travel begins later this morning.

When?

3 October – 3 November

Where?

After just over twenty-four hours in Las Vegas to spend time with family, it’s off to Europe. More specifically, that will include Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and a half-day jaunt into Germany.

Where?!

Perhaps it’s a gross underestimation of readers’ geographical knowledge to posit that the prior section didn’t provide absolute clarity. However, it’s clear that de Efteling in Kaatsheuvel doesn’t command the same position in pop culture as Disneyland in Anaheim, nor does Ghent appear in so many films as Paris. The pinned locations on the map at the top of this post will, at minimum, provide some orientation. Details about each of those points will be revealed in future posts as the trip progresses.

How?

In the most literal sense, it will happen with this backpack, a respectable number of miles on foot, and a bevy of trains and buses.

While this is an outwardly focused blog series, I’ll slip into the first person to explain that I’m able to do this through the magic of joblessness. Friday marked ten years as a software engineer for a single firm, and I chose that as my official resignation date. I’m seizing this rare opportunity for extended travel.

Who?

While the first half is to be a solo trip, Annette will be joining in Zürich before heading down to the Matterhorn. With any luck, a vicious yeti will not make an appearance. That’s to be saved for the Disney ride.

Why this blog?

Capturing such an adventure with a highlights reel at the end is nigh impossible. The best of a day’s photos interspersed with short descriptions and some personal reflections are in order. The audience will most certainly be small, but this is admittedly as much for the author to wind down at the end of a long day as it is for those at home to follow along.
